Please join us for a conversation with Odalis Valdivieso and Rene Morales concerning her latest body of work displayed in three different locations throughout the month of December.

Unlike production photographs that are by nature a form of re-enactment, Valdivieso’s photographs mirror dynamic compositions, originated by an indefinite process of manual and digital manipulation. In her work, she uses prints that pass through a process of been torn, painted over with gouache, glued with paint chips, then re-photographed, re-scanned, and manipulated with computer software. The order can change and be repeated multiple times. After being printed, the photographs are folded to give the illusion of a painted canvas, freeing them from negotiations with additional decorative components such as the frame or the glass.

Odalis Valdivieso was born in Caracas, Venezuela. She currently lives and works in Miami. She has been featured in exhibitions such as Practices Remain, Regina Rex, Queens, Recent Works, Le Cloître et L’église des Billettes, Paris, SET, Bridge Red Studios – Project Space, North Miami, Noise Field, Dorsch Gallery, Miami, New Work Miami 2010, Miami Art Museum, Miami, After Process, Miami Beach Regional Library,Ocupa, Far Side Gallery, Miami, Urban Interventions, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, El Rosario, Talking Heads, Girls Club, Fort Lauderlade, and Fragile Global Performance Chain Journey, Florence, to name a few. The rest of the series of Paper Folding is simultaneously on view at the Miami Art Museum, as part of New Work Miami2013, and at Alejandra von Hartz Gallery at the project room.

René Morales is Associate Curator at Miami Art Museum, where he has organized over 25 exhibitions. Before moving to Miami, Morales worked at the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, where he organized a major exhibition of contemporary art from the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, among several other projects. His writings have appeared in numerous publications, including Cabinet Magazine. Morales received his Bachelor’s degree from Swarthmore College and his Master’s degree from Brown University.
